About David

Institutional clients can, at times, be intimidated by their fiduciary obligations. That’s why David Luckes finds it so rewarding to empower clients with the information they need to understand their investment options, make thoughtful choices and better execute their governance responsibilities in overseeing the assets entrusted to them. He believes effective asset stewardship translates directly into an institution’s capacity to serve its stakeholders today and tomorrow.

David values the opportunity to help institutional clients achieve their goals, many of which directly affect the lives of individuals, families, neighborhoods and entire communities. While the expertise of an institutional advisor is grounded in investment management, David knows first-hand that advisors must also be mission partners with their clients.

In his role, David leads Buckingham Strategic Wealth’s business development, operations, and service offering to institutions and nonprofits, bringing the firm’s client-centered and evidence-based approach to organizations in these sectors. He also serves many of our institutional clients as their lead advisor.

Prior to joining Buckingham, David served on a wealth management team in the private banking and investment group at Merrill Lynch in St. Louis. He also spent 10 years as president and CEO of the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. He helped grow the foundation’s net assets by $125 million and secured more than $200 million in gifts while also making more than $130 million grants over his tenure. David previously worked as a senior philanthropic consultant with Merrill Lynch Trust Company after spending 18 years as a development officer and executive in the nonprofit sector. His roles included director of external relations for The Chicago Community Trust and deputy director of development for Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

David remains an active author and conference speaker, lecturing on topics related to private philanthropy, fundraising and nonprofit management. He is a past faculty member in DePaul University’s Fund Raising Management Certificate Program in Chicago and has served as an adjunct professor in the Arts Administration Program at the Art Institute of Chicago.

He earned a bachelor’s degree and MBA from Northwestern University. David is also an Investment Advisor Representative and holds his Series 65 financial license and has passed the Series 7 and Series 66 exams.

David serves on the board of directors at the Eden Theological Seminary and Missouri Military Academy. He is also a member of the National Ski Patrol, teaching emergency care and patrolling at Hidden Valley Ski Resort in Wildwood, Missouri.

David and his husband, Karl Stroud, live in Webster Groves, Missouri, with their children, Aaron and Hannah.
